Mel Phillips
Disability Support Facilitator
What inspired you to pursue a career in supporting individuals with disabilities?
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to pursue a career dedicated to helping others. Knowing that I can brighten someone's day, even in a small way, gives me a true sense of purpose.
What is your work history?
I spent 9 years working as a cook before transitioning into aged care and home care, where I've dedicated the past 7 years of my career.
What do you enjoy most about working in the Function Lifestyle Group programs?
I love the freedom and personalization that the programs offer. While they are structured, they remain flexible, allowing for adaptations based on each participant's needs. If someone prefers not to take part in a particular activity, the approach is always client-centered. We also have an amazing team, and it truly feels like a family.
What particular skills/interests do you have that you share with the participants?
With many years of experience in the healthcare setting, I have developed a solid understanding of a wide range of health conditions. I’m also familiar with the behavioral challenges that often accompany these conditions. As a patient person, I believe this quality is particularly valuable when working with individuals who have mental and physical differences.
What are three words you would use to describe your personality?
Bubbly. Patient. Empathetic.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, drawing, listening to podcasts, reading, and exploring the great outdoors.
